McDonough Fire Department gets federal grant for new equipment

McDONOUGH – The McDonough Fire Department is getting a financial boost from a federal grant that was announced to the department on Wednesday.
The department is slated to receive $23,810 in federal funding which will allow it to replace old and outdated equipment. Money was allocated through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, a program geared toward meeting the needs of local fire departments by assisting with the high costs of equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources.
The volunteer-based McDonough department will use the money to purchase new fire turnout gear along with additional gloves and hoods for its firefighters.
“We’re going to put this money to good use,” said McDonough Fire Chief Donald Granger. “The life of a set of turnout gear is only about 10 years, and the 10 or 15 sets of gear we have we purchased 10 years ago, so this will help us replace what’s outdated.”
Grant funding is crucial in helping local departments stay up to speed when it comes to providing essential services, said U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both of whom announced the grant award on Wednesday.
“It is critical that we provide our fire departments with the cutting edge safety equipment they need to keep our firefighters safe, so they can do their jobs effectively,” said Schumer. “Our first responders are our local heroes and our primary line of defense – it is crucial to provide them with the resources they need to continue their important work of saving lives.”
Added Gillibrand, “We must ensure that our first responders who put themselves in harm’s way have the most up-to-date equipment they need to help save lives. The McDonough Fire Department will use this funding to invest in critical equipment that will help keep them safe as they do their job protecting our community.”
The McDonough Fire Department has 25 active volunteer members, one fire engine and tanker and an EMS fire department based rescue.
Assistance to Firefighters Grants are administered by the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the Department’s United States Fire Administration. Grants are competitive and awarded to applicants that are both in financial need and most closely address the program’s priorities.
