NORWICH – Norwich busted open its Otsenango Pony League playoff game with Edmeston Thursday scoring 13 runs over the final two innings to advance to the league semifinals.
"Pretty much everyone hit, and everyone was putting the ball in play," said Norwich coach Nick McCullough, whose club scored six runs in the fifth, and seven more in the seventh.
Norwich led 3-0 after two innings on the strength of Mike Trevisani's two-run single. Edmeston chopped the margin to one with two runs in the fifth, however, Norwich answered right back. "Sometimes it takes a while for us to get going, but once we get the momentum, we run with it," McCullough said.
Trevisani led Norwich's hitters finishing 4-for-4 with four RBI, two runs scored, and three stolen bases. Marcus Cashman had three hits and four RBI, and Jon Matlack-Grey went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Norwich also added a sparkling inning-ending double play in the top of the third. Norwich centerfielder Payton Stirone flagged a deep fly ball for the second out, then threw to third to gun down an Edmeston baserunner attempting to advance. "I think that was the play that turned it around for us," McCullough said of Stirone's throw. "After that, the players felt there was no way they could lose."
Norwich plays Cobleskill Saturday at noon at Sidney High School.
