Butternut Valley Garden Club seeking amateurs for their rose exhibit
Butternut Valley Garden Club's 2015 Standard Flower Show will be showing various sections for display in the Horticulture Division titled, 'With a Beauty That Thrills' in the upcoming Otsego County Fair. The Otsego County Fair will run from Tuesday August 4th until Sunday August 9th.
“We've got around 15 to 20 members roughly, we're actually a very active group surprisingly. We lost a few members last year due to a few things but we're always looking for more people,” said Marge Mathis, Publicity Chairman and member of the Butternut Valley Garden Club.
One particular section which the club is hoping to get more involvement in this year is the Rose Section titled, 'So Sweet' which is open to any amateur growers' residing in Otsego County.
Classes are as follows:
Class 1. Hybrid tea (disbudded), 1 bloom
Class 2. Floribunda, 1 spray
Class 3. Miniature, 1 spray
Class 4. Polyantha, 1 spray
Class 5. Any other named rose of merit, 1 bloom or spray
All other sections being exhibited by the Butternut Valley Garden Club require a membership, all are still welcome to come see and enjoy the displays.
Anyone thinking of entering should remember that all entries should be shown with two to five sets of leaves.
All entrees need to be submitted by Sunday August 2nd from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. All entries must be accompanied by entry cards completed in pencil, available from Entries Chairman: Kathy Hartman, 607-437-4176, or at Flower Hall on Sunday from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m.
Monday the exhibits will be closed to all, including the members of the Butternut Valley Garden Club, for judging purposes. The exhibit will open up for the public on Tuesday August 4th when the fair opens as well.
All entries may be dismantled Sunday, August 9, 2015 after 8:00 p.m. and must be removed by 12:00 p.m. August 10, 2015.
“One cool thing we had last year was a big display in the middle of the room about table settings, and where you could use flowers as place settings,” said Mathis.
This years theme "The Vale of the Butternut" is based on the poem written by Sheldon C. Stoddard, of Gilbertsville, NY.
All of the Division, Section and Class titles this year are derived from lines in the poem.
The exhibit itself is free of cost, everyone is invited to come check out the event whether they’re directly involved or just interested.
“It's amazing the things people can dig up that can go along with the themes and the flowers,” said Mathis.
