Lightning strikes tree, garage catches fire

NORWICH – Monday, Aug. 24, shortly after 3 p.m. the City of Norwich Fire Department, Chenango County Bureau of Fire, North Norwich Fire Department, and the Oxford Fire Department responded to a garage fire at 69 Canasawacta Street in the City of Norwich.

The fire was started after a lightning strike hit a large pine tree located behind the garage, after the lightning strike split and spiraled down the tree, it then spread quickly to the nearby garage. The fire caused significant damage to the garage itself, but was secured before it could cause any other damage.
