UV grad hired on as head basketball coach at SUNY Delhi
DELHI - Zack Thomsen is a 2006 graduate of Unadilla Valley high school. There he played on the varsity baskeball team and eventually went on to play in college. Recently Thomsen was hired as the head coach of the SUNY Delhi men’s basketball team.
“I kind of always knew that I wanted to coach,” Thomsen said. “Even when I was a kid I knew.”
Thomsen says that he has been playing basketball since he was a no older than five years old. After high school Thomsen went on to Onandaga Community College and played there for two years until he transfered to West Virgina Tech. and played his remaining eligable years there. “Playing the sport helps out a lot when coaching,” Thomsen said. “It helps me relate to the players as a former student athlete.”
After his college career, Thomsen went back to Onandaga Community College to try his hand at coaching. There he was a graduate assistant on the basketball team. After much sucess there, he then moved across the City of Syracuse to Le Moyne Collge where he was a graduate assistant there as well. After finishing his gratuate assistantship for the Le Moyne Dolphins, Thomsen was hired at Sheperd University in Sheperdstown, West Virginia.
It wasn’t until this past month was hired on as head coach for the Broncos and had the opportunity to move closer to home. Thomsen believes that this is a great opportunity for him and is excited to get started this season. Look for Thomsen and his team once his season starts this fall.
