DA at summer picnic: ‘I love this job’

NORWICH – A summer picnic was held at the Canasawacta Country Club on Friday, Aug. 28 for those wishing to show support for Chenango County District Attorney Joseph McBride, and for those eager to learn more about him.
Organizers estimate that 125-130 people attended the picnic.
“I am loyal to Mr. McBride because he has been by the side of Chenango County’s law enforcement officers, specifically me and my beloved Norwich PD coppers for many years,” said former Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino during his speech. “When policemen are making life altering decisions, let me tell you, this is the man you want on speed dial.”
Angelino added that these decisions are not simply made Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“These are more times than not in the middle of the night,” said Angelino. “If you happened to be at the Lobsterfest a few Sundays ago, you will know that Mr. McBride was conspicuously absent, because he was at the Norwich PD working side-by-side with cops investigating a shooting. And that’s exactly how it worked for me. Never did a call to Mr. McBride go unanswered. Even at 3 a.m., this man gave me sound advice that stood the test of time and judicial scrutiny.”
Another man who took the microphone to speak was Mr. Joseph Caputo. “He (McBride) is one of the greatest husbands, the greatest fathers, the greatest lawyers, and a great man,” Caputo said. “One of the greatest I have met in my life.”
“Together we will bring him back because he gets it done,” said Caputo. “I thank you, everyone, for coming to this event to support this man.”
Said Angelino, “I’m humbled and embarrassed that a man with the character, education, and responsibilities that Mr. McBride possesses has entrusted me to be a part of this important campaign, asking me to speak and send letters on his behalf.”
Angelino turned to McBride and said, “Joe, it is a pleasure and honor to stand beside you and your lovely wife LouAnn.”
“I’ve sat through many felony county court hearings and trials with Mr. McBride – and I have to tell you – this man thinks on another level. If you think he talks fast, just imagine the speed his brain is working,” said Angelino. “In a courtroom, this man thinks quick on his feet. And I’ve seen it personally, 12-person juries trust this man.”
Angelino said that a person in charge of a law enforcement agency or a prosecutor doesn’t make everyone happy.
“As a matter of fact,” said Angelino, “When we do our job at least one person is always upset and it is very possible the other half isn’t satisfied either. But the DA position isn’t about making friends, or being popular. It’s about seeking the truth and ensuring justice. And this is exactly what Mr. McBride has been doing near flawlessly for 16 years as Chenango County’s District Attorney.”
Angelino explained that the relationship between he and McBride was professional. “It’s not like we’re friends,” he said. “It has always been professional, we never really palled around together.”
Angelino spoke about ways those in attendance could assist with volunteering for McBride’s campaign.
“I know we all lead busy lives, but this man who helps all of us needs our help once every few years,” said Angelino. “You can knock on doors in your neighborhood, walk with the group in parades, or make a few phone calls.”
McBride then took the stage to say a few words, and first thanked the sponsors, those who volunteered their time to help, and those who spoke.
“I’m not always a hard-nosed prosecutor,” said McBride. “I like to play the piano – well, more like torture, really – my family, friends, and even strangers. Mike O’Connor has donated his time and talent here tonight and for that I thank him.”
McBride extended his gratitude to all who attended the picnic and to anyone who helped with parades, letters to the editor, and lawn signs.
“Your actions do not go unnoticed,” said McBride.
“The DA is truly the people’s attorney,” McBride said. “We are experiencing a drug epidemic and an unusual surge in violent crime.” He added that he knows he is up to the task to for Chenango County to be a safe place for families to live and raise their children.
“Being DA is not easy,” said McBride. “But simply put: I love my job.”
McBride explained how he moved from being a lawyer in private practice to the District Attorney. “I wanted to set a good example for my children,” said McBride. “The best thing to do was to be on the side of justice and truth.”
The DA spoke to the point of the pending homicide cases. “Serving the victims’ families reminds me on a daily basis, that once again, I love this job.”
Angelino asked those in attendance to show their support for McBride in the primary to he held next week.
“The alternative should be a concern to all of us,” Angelino said. “Once we win the primary on Sept. 10, we can take a breather, rest for a while, and then on Saturday, Sept. 12 we can begin our General Election campaign to win again in November.”
Anyone in need of an absentee ballot can visit www.elections.ny.gov/VotingAbsentee.html#main.
McBride said anyone needing a ride to the polls on Thursday, Sept. 10 can call 244-5539 or 316-6483 and someone from the campaign will ensure a ride is provided.
Polls are open from noon until 9 p.m. To find the appropriate polling place, visit www.co.chenango.ny.us/elections/documents/PollingSites.pdf.
