Fazio scores five as Norwich girls down Windsor 8-0

NORWICH - After a tough loss to Chenango Forks earlier in the week, the Norwich girls’ varsity soccer team took on Windsor at home and proved that their first loss wouldn’t define them as a team. Norwich’s Michaela Fazio scored five of the Purple Tornado’s eight goals in their first shut out of the season.
“It was a fantastic game for the girls,” said Norwich Coach Adam Sprague. “Obviously Michaela had a great day, but just about everybody else contributed on the field.”
Norwich started their scoring early as Fazio was fouled in the box about ten minutes into the first half and netted her awarded penalty kick. It wasn’t much longer until Fazio had her second of the game increasing the Tornado’s lead to two. A few minutes later Hunter Hagenbuch would add to Norwich’s total and net her goal for the game after an assist by Kate Dowdall. The first 40 minutes ended with Norwich on top 3-0. “I think we totally dictated the pace really well,” Sprague said. “This was a huge confidence booster and really showed the girls what we’re capable of.”
The second half went even better for the Tornado as Cora Manwarren started it off for Norwich about half way through the second 40 minutes. Manwarren scored her first of two goals after an assist by Hunter Cole, making Norwich’s total 4-0. Fazio went on to score her remaining three goals in tremendous fashion, registering assists from Savannah Williams, Cora Manwarren, and Kate Dowdall. “The stats won’t show it but all of our girls had amazing days as well,” Sprague said. “We had a great pace and passed and shot really well throughout the whole game. It was hard to believe that this was only some girls’ second varsity game”
After the final whistle blew and the dust settled, Norwich came out on top 8-0, making this Norwich goal keeper Kassidy Seary’s first shut out of the season. Norwich is back in action today when they travel to Chenango Valley to take on the Warriors.
