Cornell Extension to offer horticulture classes in Sept.

NORWICH – From 5–7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept.16 in the Cornell Cooperative Extension kitchen, community members are invited to experience the basics of botany at newly formed program titled 'Botany For Everyone!'
One of two new horticulture classes offered this month at Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Chenango County, the two-and -a-half hour class is the brainchild of Patty Catalano, Horticulture Educator for CCE of Chenango County.
The class will cover the basics of plant families, plant and flower parts and a little bit of taxonomy (plant names) as well.
“It is a basic class meant to appeal to beginners who would like to know more about the science behind what goes on in their gardens,” said Catalano.
A $5 fee covers the cost of materials, and the deadline for signing up is September 14.
Likewise, mark your calendars for September 30th so as not to miss 'Seed Collecting For Everyone' program that will run from 6 – 8 p.m.
This two hour class will show you how to identify seeds from chaff in flowers and vegetables, the best way to clean and store them, which plants you may or may not want to collect seed from and different seed treatments that will improve germination of your seeds the following year.
Again, a $5 fee will cover materials costs, and a deadline of September 28 has been established.
For more information on these classes and other upcoming classes in horticulture or on the Master Gardener Volunteer program in Chenango County, contact Patty Stimmel-Catalano at patty.stimmel@cornell.edu or call 334-5841 x 16.
