Bates scores a hat-trick in S-E field hockey’s first game of the season

SHERBURNE - In their first game of the season Thursday, the Sherburne-Earlville varsity field hockey team took on Central Valley Academy and won handily, beating the visiting team 5-0.
The first half started and ended well for the Marauders as slipped shots past the opposing team's defense and scored their first two goals to get up on CVA 2-0 at the end of the half. Approximately half way through the first half it was Megan Rodman got it started for S-E and scored the first goal of the game. With 3:36 left to go in the first Alexa Bates fired a shot and scored her first goal of three to make the score 2-0 at the end of the first half. "It was a great win for us," said Sherburne-Earlville coach Sheila Cooman. "We lost to this team last year so it felt nice to get the win."
To start of the second half Bates was back at it, scoring her second goal of the game to push the score to 3-0. It wasn't all offense that won the game for the Marauders as the goal keeper Lexi Jordan registered seven saves on the game. Getting back at it was Kaley Judge who scored with 13:40 left to go in the game. "It has been a long time since we had scoring like this," Cooman said. "I saw a lot of good things from our girls."
The final goal of the game came with 5:12 left in the game and capped off Bates' hat trick for the day, putting an exclamation mark on the 5-0 win.
The Marauders are back in action when they travel to New Hartford High School Tuesday, September, 8.

Norwich

CHENANGO VALLEY - In their third game in three days the Norwich Purple Tornado girls’ varsity soccer team traveled to Chenango Valley Thursday to take on the Warriors, ultimately losing 1-0.
The game winning shot came with approximately ten minutes to go in the first half by CV’s Maria Forbidussi. Taking the ball down the sidelines Forbidussi fired a cross towards the net which slipped past Norwich defense and into the goal for the score. “It was a tough game for us,” said Norwich Coach Adam Sprague. “This was our third game in a row and it was catching up to us. We were tired.”
The stats sheet showed a very different game, with Norwich out shooting Chenango Valley 13 to four. It was clear that the Purple Tornado girls had a lot of offense, but could not capitalize. “It was a frustrating day,” Sprague said. “I think that we definitely out worked them, but we were just too tired after three games in three days.”
Norwich will get their chance to get revenge when Chenango Valley comes to Norwich High School on October, 10 to play.

Sherburne-Earlville

MOUNT MARKHAM - On Wednesday, September, 2, the Sherburne-Earlville girls’ varsity soccer team traveled to Mount Markham in their first game of the season. Both teams playing a hard fought game, S-E made the difference and pulled away with a late goal in the second half and won 2-1.
In the first 40 minutes of play, Marauder Lexi Elderkin scored the team’s first goal of the season early in the half. With the score 1-0 Mount Markham had their work cut out for them. But on a Mount Markham corner kick, the ball snuck past the S-E defense and the score was tied 1-1 going into the second half.
After equal play on both sides the game was tied with very little time left. It wasn’t until three minutes remaining in the game when a Morgan Simpson, assisted by Taylor Coughlin, netted the ball for the game winning goal, putting S-E up 2-1 and ending the game.
S-E is back in action tonight during a tournament hosted by the Marauders, playing at 6:00 p.m. at Marauder Stadium.

Bainbridge-Guilford

BAINBRIDGE - In yesterday’s game the Bainbridge-Guilford boys’ varsity soccer team took on Afton and ended up winning 5-2.
Starting things off for the Bobcats was Aidan Nolan who scored the first goal of the game in the first half, Nolan was assisted by Trevor Holoquist. It was later in the half when Xavier Turniack took a corner kick from Holoquist and netted his first goal of the game, effectively making the score 2-0 going into the second half.
In the last 40 minutes of the game Afton put up two goals to attempt to close the gap between them and B-G, but their attempt was to no avail when the Holoquist-Turniack connection came through once again on another corner kick that turned into a goal for Turniack. Holoquist also had a goal of his own during the day as well. The final goal scored for the Bobcats was by Kyle Rideout, who was assisted by Thomas Petrotoni, to make the final score 5-2.

Golf

Norwich

PLYMOUTH - On their home course yesterday the Norwich varsity golf team took on the Chenango Valley Warriors on their home course and won 214 - 236.
In their sixth match of the season, Norwich went up against a good Chenango Valley team for their third win of the season. Shooting the low round of the day was Norwich's Ryan Johnson who shot a 36. Johnson has been a consistent top two player for the Norwich Tornado team this season, repeatedly shooting scores in the low 40's and high to mid 30's. Johnson was closely followed by Alex Gage who shot a 40 for the day.The Norwich team outscored CV by 11 shots over the course of the day
The low scorer for Chenango Valley was Webb Botting who shot a 43 on the course, followed by Devon Buckland who shot a 44.
Norwich has the week off and doesn't play until September, 15. Until then Coach David Branham plans on practicing hard. "We're going to work on our medium approach shots to the green," said Branham. "Our driving is great, we just need to do a little tweaking on our chipping and putting."
