Annual Antiques Show brings all things old to the fairgrounds this weekend

NORWICH – It’s a classic case of older is better as the Chenango County Historical Society kicks off its 39th Annual Antiques Show at the county fairgrounds in Norwich this Labor Day weekend.
Gates to the event will open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, giving lovers of all things old and rusty the chance to scavenge for that one of a kind item for their collection. Admission is $4 per person.
The Historical Society is also trying something new this year by combining the event with the annual Chenango Canal Boat Derby. The derby races dozens of model canal boats down a small portion of the Chenango River, from the East Main Street bridge to the finish line at the edge of the fairgrounds.
Tickets for the boat derby can be purchased at the Historical Society on Rexford Street in Norwich for $10 for a single, or three for $25. This year’s first place winner will receive a $500 cash reward. Other prizes include gift certificates, services and other item donations from nearly 60 businesses and individual supporters from throughout the county. The boat race starts at noon.
Proceeds raised during the events will directly support the Historical Society and their mission to educate through their use of a variety of exhibits, projects and various activities.
“This year, the forecast is looking like there’s no rain, so we are hoping that will help bring folks out,” said Sarah Mahan, Chenango County Historical Society Executive Director. “Especially with the antiques show and boat derby combined this year, there might be some people who will want to try the boat derby and stay for the antiques show. It’s really a fun event and something for the whole family.”
More than 30 venders are slated for this years antiques show, selling anything from glassware to tools, dolls to baseball memorabilia, toys to furniture – and anything and everything in between.
“We’re seeing the number of vendors go up this year,” Mahan noted. “We owe a big thank you to all the supporters and people who have donated.”
In addition, the antiques show this year features ice cream from Gilligan’s of Sherburne, and an hour-long performance from the Smyrna Citizens Band starting at 2:30 p.m. The Northeast Classic Car Museum will also be on hand with its annual Mustang raffle that puts ticket buyers in a drawing for a 1966 Mustang convertible.
The Chenango County Historical Society would like to thank major sponsors Commerce Chenango, Tuller’s Catering, Rentals to Go, and the Northeast Classic Car Museum. Additional thanks go to volunteers Stephanie Coggins (CCHS Board Chair), Lukas Brown (Boat Derby Chair), and John Antonowicz (Antiques Show Chair).
Said Mahan, “This event has been going on for years. We’re excited to have a lot of returning dealers supporting and promoting the event, and a lot of new folks joining us as well. We’ve really enjoyed getting to know these new advocates of New York and local history.”
