Team hopes to raise funds for jackets, local food pantries

NORWICH – A final fundraiser is set for this weekend in the hopes enough will be raised for the team to buy jackets and to donate to local food pantries.
On Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. the Norwich Boys’ Soccer team will feature their final fundraising event with Smokin' Bones BBQ. This fundraiser will help raise money for the team as well as give back to the community.
“It is our last money raiser to help fund soccer gear and our end of year banquet. We also give part of our profit to Dollars for Scholars scholarship. In addition we help fund our local food pantries. We need our community to help us help others,” said Gloria Scottie Decker, Head Coach of the Norwich Varsity boys’ soccer team.
When Decker took over as the boys soccer head coach she immediately expressed her desire to help this group of kids succeed in every way possible on and off the field.
“It was an idea I had, they had nothing when I inherited the team three years ago, no boosters club, no way to get money, so we have had to go into the community and get the money ourselves. This year we hope to raise enough money to buy jackets for the team, and in the future we might even be able to help fund our junior varsity team,” said Decker.
Prices for the fundraiser are as follows:
Chicken Dinner (includes salt potatoes, cole slaw, roll) -$10.00
Half Chicken Only -$6.50
Rib Dinner (includes salt potatoes, cole slaw, roll) -$13.00
The menu for the fundraising event at Smokin' Bones BBQ this Sunday can also be found on various fliers which have been distributed throughout the community, or Decker can be contacted about the fundraiser directly on her Facebook.
“We did not sell out last time, but we made $350 for the team and $100 for the community, plus a food bank donation. We really need to sell out Sunday. I ordered 250 chickens and 60 ribs. There may be a limited supply of food, it may or may not be available the day of, and by planning ahead you can guarantee there will be enough,” said Decker.
All are invited to attend the Norwich Boys’ Soccer team at Smokin' Bones BBQ for the fundraising event.
The next game for the Varsity boys soccer team will be today at 11 a.m. in Norwich on the turf. Spectators are asked to bring canned goods to home games for varsity and JV instead of being charged admission at the gate. This food will be donated to a different food pantry each week.
“I have a family here with these boys, so it is just a wonderful way for my boys to give back to their community that has done so much for them,” said Decker.
