Norwich

NORWICH - In their first home meet of the season the Norwich varsity girls' swim team took on Susquehannah Valley in what would end as a victory for SV, 96-65.
Norwich would win their fair share of first place spots in the meet, but only fields a team of eight girls. "We're a very small team," said Norwich coach Amanda Downey. "We can take a lot of first and seconds but we can't really fill the lanes."
Norwich did just that Friday, September, 11 when they last competed, winning six of the 12 events, yet still losing the overall meet based on points. Norwich swimmer Maya Blaisure is already off to a fantastic start this season, posting winning times in the 200 medley relay, the 200 individual medley, the 100 breast stroke, and on the 400 Freestyle relay team. Blaisure and the rest of the Tornado women are looking to have very competitive individual seasons on such a small team. Norwich competes again tonight when they travel to Owego.

Bainbridge-Guilford

BAINBRIDGE - On a Friday night under the lights the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats took on Delhi in their second game of the season and won 8-0.
The lone score of the game came with 8:52 left in the second quarter when B-G quarterback Austin Carr ran the ball all the way down to the Delhi 1 yard line, only to fumble the ball. Fortunately for the Bobcats a quick thinking Alex DeGrot recovered the ball in the end zone for his first ever varsity touchdown. After a successful two point conversion, B-G was now up 8-0 on Delhi.
The rest of the game proved to be a defensive struggle with both teams never gaining any real footing on offense. Bainbridge-Guilford ended the day with throwing only one interception, while taking away five from Delhi. "It was a big win for us," said B-G head coach Jim Mosher. "The kids played outstanding on defense and I can't give them enough credit."
The B-G defense shut down a Delhi offense that scored 30 points the week before in their first game of the season. A relentless Bobcats front four of Pete Wiemet, Tyler Hart, Corey Oliver, Nick Decker, Brandon Sickler, and Cameron Sickler put pressure on the Delhi quarterback, never giving him room to breathe all game.
"I'm really proud of how well the kids did," Mosher said. "Our defense did exactly what we told them to do and did it tremendously."
After a scoreless second half B-G's Austin Carr picked off a Delhi pass and ran it all the way down to the Delhi one yard line where he downed the ball. From there B-G would line up in victory formation to run out the clock. After a big win this week, B-G is gearing up for their next game against Unadilla Valley when the Storm comes to Bainbridge next Friday, September, 18.

Greene

GREENE - After beating a tough Unatego-Franklin team last week, Greene played at home for the first time Friday, September, 11, against a Lansing team that was coming off of a division championship last year. Greene would ultimately prevail 34-6.
Neither team would score early as the first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie. In the second quarter is really where Greene started to pick things up. Their first score came off of a Joe Phillips run from 37 yards out. Phillips would end the night with 85 yards and just one score. After a failed two-point attempt, Greene was now up 6-0 on Lansing. Later in the quarter, Zach Orzell would punch in another score with a two yard run. After a successful two point attempt the score was 14-0, giving Greene the lead that would ultimately be the difference in the game. “We had a great all around game,” said Greene’s head coach David Gorton. “Defensively we had some really great stops. We had two different goal line stands and made some plays that really gave us some great positioning all game.”
To start the third quarter Greene was up 14-0. It was here where Lansing would earn their only touchdown of the game on a 66 yard touchdown run. It wouldn’t be long before Greene fired back and scored again on a 1 yard touchdown run by Luke Erickson, puting the Trojans up 22-6 on Lansing. Later in the fourth quarter Greene would score twice more, once on a 25 yard pass from Orzell to Jordan Harrington and again on an Erickson touchdown run from six yards out. Greene would improve to 2-0 on the season. “Lansing is a quality team,” said Gorton. “We were very pleased with the way that we played.”
Greene is back in action again this Friday night when they travel to Deposit to take on an undefeated Deposit-Hancock team.

Sherburne-Earlville

SHERBURNE- Sherburne-Earlville relied on a sound ground game and solid defense as the Marauders powered past Mount Markham 20-7 in their home opener Saturday night September, 12.
Brodie Roebuck carried 16 times for 131 yards, including a pair of 6-yard scores as S-E chalked up 316 yards on the ground. Matt Hull added 85 yards on 14 carries, while Hunter Owen netted 71 yards on five carries.
“When you have three guys that average five yards or more per carry, I think you have to tip a hat to the offensive line,” S-E first-year head coach Ed Holmquist said. “Tyler White, Gavin Paul, Hunter Hatton, Darren Knapp, Tanner Campbell and Sam Tuttle really set the tone up front and we were able to control the line of scrimmage against a very physical Mount Markham team.”
Quarterback Jake Kwasnik, making his first career start for S-E, also added a touchdown run as he plunged in from two yards out late in the third quarter.
Defensively, the Marauders limited the Mustangs to just 123 yards of total offense, with the only big play coming on a 42-yard touchdown run by Mustangs’ senior Collin Maine. Freshman Cody Beckwith paced S-E with a team-high 11 tackles.
“We’re just really pleased with the effort we saw tonight,” Holmquist said. “We played with a lot of energy and we executed well for the most part. I’m extremely proud of all our guys.”
S-E returns to the field Friday Night when they play host to Phoenix at 7 pm.
