New report lauds Farm to School Grants as a success

WASHINGTON – As federal legislators continue talks to revamp school lunch guidelines this week, one program – the USDA’s “Farm to School Grant Program” – is touting success encouraging better nutrition for students while also giving a boost to ranchers and farmers.
According to a new report released by the USDA, the Farm to School Grant Program has helped 12,300 schools improve nutritious meal options with local ingredients for 6.9 million students while also giving a boost to farmers in their communities.
The Farm to School Grant is a federally funded initiative through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act to encourage kids to eat more fruits and vegetables and promote agriculture.
The new report shows the program has awarded 221 grants in 49 states over the past three years. Of those, 50 percent of the programs funded included expanding healthy menu options in school cafeterias; 46 percent supplied training for food service staff about menu planning and meal preparation; and 65 percent included nutrition education activities.
The USDA cites more than 40,300 schools have farm to school programs that impact 23.5 million kids nationwide.
The Farm to School Grant is lumped in negotiations to renew the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act set to expire Sept. 30.
