Sherburne now features fan voted best ice cream place in the area
SHERBURNE – The Village of Sherburne now features the best ice cream place in a 19 county area of New York State, as Gilligan's Island gets voted the winner for best ice cream place.
WCNY public television covers all or parts of this 19 county area in central New York including: Chenango, Broome, Otsego, Madison, Oneida, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, Onondaga, Cayuga, Wayne, Ontario, Seneca, Yates, Schuyler, Tompkins, Cortland, Tioga & Herkimer.
Recently, WCNY has decided to do a series that goes throughout these 19 counties and allows its viewers to nominate and then vote for the best places in different categories.
The series is named, Quest For The Best, as WCNY decided to start with finding out who the public felt was the best ice cream place in the area.
“We have a pretty active Facebook presence, so we got nominated by a fan, I noticed and we followed it, and we won,” said Mike Lagoe, owner of Gilligan's Island.
When asked what he thought made Gilligan's Island so special to win this award, Legoe answered, “Well we got voted the best ice cream place not the best ice cream necessarily, so I think people look for community involvement, and atmosphere which we have.”
“We are also one of the only places left in central New York to still make Homemade Hard Ice Cream right here in Sherburne,” Legoe added as well regarding the ice cream.
This year marks the first year WCNY has done the Quest For The Best competition, as they had more than 50 places nominated and over 1,000 voters for the best ice cream place category.
The two runner's-up behind Gilligan's Island were: ZEM’s Ice Cream, in Canastota New York; and Cayuga Lake Creamery, in Interlaken, New York.
Next category up for WCNY in this competition will be to find out who in the 19-county area has the best spaghetti and meatball place. Nominations and voting can be done online at: http://www.wcny.org/qftb/
The community is reminded that Gilligan's Island in Sherburne doesn’t just serve ice cream as they also serve a variety of food for lunch and dinner.
Gilligan's Island is open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., Monday through Sunday. More information regarding Gilligan's Island can be found on their Facebook site at: https://www.facebook.com/GilligansSherburne/timeline
“You can enjoy our ice cream anytime because we are open everyday year round,” said Legoe.
