Norwich soccer falls to Johnson City, while UV soccer triumphs over Oxford

NORWICH - In a home match yesterday, September, 15, the Norwich girls’ varsity soccer team lost to Johnson City in a 1-0 heart breaker.
Johnson City came out strong and peppered the Norwich defense with shots all game, finishing with a total of 21. Their lone goal didn’t come until 20 minutes into the second half when Brittney Brand put a shot acrosss her body and into the far left corner of the goal. “We had a pretty solid defensive day,” said Norwich coach Adam Sprague. “JC was really on top of us most of the game and I’m proud of the way that the girls played.”
Norwich had their fair share of opportunities to score throughout the game but couldn’t quite get the right bounce to go in. After most shot attempts a Johnson City defender was right on top of the ball to prevent it from going anywhere.
Norwich will play again this Saturday, September, 19, when they host Seaton Catholic.

Oxford

OXFORD - Last night, Tuesday, September, 15, the Unadilla Valley Storm girls' varsity soccer team traveled to Oxford to take on the Blackhawks. The game ended with a score of 3-0 in favor of UV.
The game saw an all out attack by the UV offense which registered 38 shots during the game, but only three goals. The first goal was scored late in the first half by UV's Julia Ogelsby and would carry the game over into the half. Oxford's Rachel Seiler had her hands full all game deflecting shots by the Storm and registered 27 saves throughout the course of the game.
With five minutes remaining in the second half Cearah Bacoftafio shot and scored, making the game 2-0 in favor of the Storm. The final goal of the game was scored by Meegan White of UV with ten seconds left to go in the game. White fired a shot which found its mark to make the final 3-0 in favor of UV.
The Blackhawks will continue their schedule Monday, September, 21, when they host Walton; while Unadilla Valley plays again this weekend in the New York Pizzeria Tournament in New Berlin.

Sherburne-Earlville

EDMESTON - In a tough match-up for a young S-E boy's soccer team, the Marauders traveled to Edmeston to take on the Panthers.
The game would end in a 3-0 score in favor of Edmeston after some tough play on both sides. In the first half Edmeston would sneak past the S-E defenders to put in a shot that would turn into a goal for Luke Ough. Ough's goal would be the lone goal of the half and the two teams would go into the break with Edmeston up 1-0.
To start off the second half Edmeston's Robert Sumner was given the ball by Austin Klaus who then put a shot past the S-E defense to give his team their second score. "We were playing pretty evenly up until the second half," said Sherburne-Earlville head coach Mike Rodriguez. "We had some chances in the second half but couldn't quite capitalize on them."
Late in the second half Parker Robinson would score his first goal of the game after he was fed a pass by the game's second scorer, Sumner. The game would end with the score 3-0 in favor of Edmeston.
S-E will play again this weekend in the Greene tournament in their first game against Chenango Forks.

Norwich

OWEGO - After a short break the Norwich Varsity golf team was back last night to take on Owego on their opponent’s home course and won 203-215.
Shooting the low round of the match for Norwich was Nate Scheer who shot a 38. Scheer was tied with Owego’s Joe Waltner for the low round of the match. Coming in just behind the two were Norwich’s Brennan Maynard and Owego’s Chris Weickhorst, shooting 39s.
Norwich is now 4-3 as a team and will play again today on their home course against Seaton Catholic.

Oxford

OXFORD - In a MAC conference match-up Bainbridge-Guilford traveled to Oxford to take on the Blackhawks. After all was said and done Oxford walked away winners, 235-248.
For Oxford two players tied for low round of the match, Kevin Davis and Austin Crawford both shot 42s on they day. Davis and Crawford beat out their opponent’s next best man by four strokes.
For B-G it was Kalieb Deshaw who scored the low round, shooting a 46. Deshaw was just ahead of Ben Gonzalez who shot a 47 for the day.
Oxford is now 5-2 on the season, while B-G is 3-3. Both teams will play again tomorrow, Thursday, September, 17, when Oxford travels to Hancock and B-G hosts Greene.

Field Hockey

Sherburne-Earlville

SHERBURNE - In a home match Monday, September, 14, the S-E girls varsity field hockey team took on New York Mills. After a hard fought game by both teams New York Mills ended up on top 2-1 in overtime.
In the first half New York Mills struck first with a goal by Autumn Hellinger. Hellinger’s goal came with just five minutes left in the first half and was the only goal of the first half. As the second half started S-E knew they had to pick up the pace. With the clock at 20:37 S-E’s Megan Rodman took a pass from Alanna Stumpf and fired a shot that found its way into the back of the net.
With the two teams tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game would go into overtime. This is where New York Mills would prevail, with Makenzie Stevens scoring the final goal of the game and ending it with just five minutes left to go. “This was a tough loss for us,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “We came out slow in the first half, but really dominated the second. We just have to put together a whole game to get the wins.”
S-E plays again today against Oneida at home.
