DEC, NBFD respond to another tanker rollover on Rt. 8
EDMESTON – The Village of New Berlin Fire Department was called to the scene of tractor trailer rollover in the Town of South Edmeston Sunday night.
According to scanner records, a call to Chenango County 911 dispatch indicated that a tractor trailer containing a load of raw milk overturned on State Highway 8 near the intersection of Country Road 25.
It is believed that the vehicle was en route to the Chobani yogurt plant located approximately on mile from the scene of the incident.
According to New Berlin Fore Chief Barry Jacobs, the driver mus-judged the hill and failed to negotiate a stop sign at the base of County Road 25.
Jacobs estimated that the truck had a capacity of approximately 6,000 gallons; and confirmed that the DEC spill hazard team responded to the scene.
“The tanks were mostly empty by the time we arrived,” said Jacobs. “He [the driver] said that he'd never been down that hill before, didn't realize that the road ended there.”
The Route 8 corridor from Sidney to the South Edmeston has seen more the two dozen such incidents in recent years prompting the N.Y.S. Department of Transportation to install additional signage and warning lights along the windy highway.
Currently, there are two bridge construction projects in progress along the 30-mile stretch of two-lane asphalt.
The New Berlin Chief said there were no injuries to his knowledge, and the scene was cleared shortly before midnight. It is unknown if the driver was issued a citation.
