17-year-old said to be responsible for chase spanning 3 counties
NORWICH– A 17-year old male from Utica is in Broome County Jail without bail, following the high-speed police chase that started in Oneida County, went through Norwich, and ultimately ended in Broome County.
Early Saturday, Oct. 10th, at approximately 3:45a.m., La-Tee J. Baker, 17, of Utica, was located and arrested in the area of Interstate-81, near Otseningo Park in the Town of Dickinson.
Baker allegedly matched the original description of the suspect who was described as a black male, with dreadlocks who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, and black pants. He was also described as about 20-years-old, 5 feet 7 inches, and roughly 150 pounds.
The phone of Baker was allegedly left in the stolen vehicle.
Baker was charged with reckless endangerment in the first degree, a class D felony; and criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree, a class D felony.
Baker was arraigned at the Town of Chenango court and remanded to the Broome County jail; no bail has been set at this time.
According to the New York State Police, additional charges are pending.
This arrest stemmed from a high-speed pursuit that began earlier that night, Friday Oct. 9, at approximately 9:26 p.m.
The New York State Police in Norwich observed a vehicle matching the description of a stolen vehicle out of the City of Utica.
This vehicle, which was identified as a red 2007 Hummer, was seen traveling south on State Route 12 in the Town of North Norwich.
Due to the subject’s high speed as well as erratic and aggressive driving, multiple attempts to pull the vehicle over failed, as it traveled down route 12.
The pursuit was ended briefly for safety reasons, as the suspect approached the City of Norwich and then the Village of Greene.
After the lengthy pursuit of the vehicle into Broome County, law enforcement deployed spike strips near the intersection of Castle Creek Road and Route 11 in Broome County, which blew the two front tires of the car, causing the vehicle to come to a stop.
New York State Police then said that the suspect then fled on foot into the surrounding neighborhood. Troopers followed him on foot, as the suspect allegedly made it down into a viaduct in the woods. NYSP K-9 and Broome County Sheriff’s K-9 units assisted a search of the area.
It should be noted that no one was injured during the span of the pursuit.
