Norwich tennis doubles takes second at sectionals, while Greene soccer wins the MAC

ENDWELL - The doubles team of Makenzie Maynard and Caroline Stewart took second place last Friday, October 16, at the sectional tournament in Endwell, losing to a Seton Catholic doubles team.
Maynard and Stewart took second place in the sectional tournament this season, improving from last year’s third place finish. The doubles team lost a very hard fought match to Seton Catholic in the section finals. As a result the pair is now in the state qualifying tournament this Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
“I think that they girls played very well on Friday,” said Norwich Coach John Stewart. “Both girls played singles in the regular season and haven’t had much of a chance to practice doubles. For the little amount of time that they played doubles I think that they did a great job.”
Overall the Norwich team took third as a team at the tournament. The Purple Tornado women finished behind Vestal at second and the overall champion Seton Catholic.
Match results: Makenzie Maynard & Caroline Stewart (N) lost to (Un Named & Un named) Seton Catholic, 6-2, 6-4.

Greene
GREENE - Playing on Friday, October 16, the Greene boys varsity soccer team won the MAC title by defeating Delhi-Davenport 2-0.
The first half of the game saw neither team score a goal and ended in a 0-0 tie. It wasn’t until the 28th minute of the second half when Spencer Klumpp scored the team’s first goal. Klumpp scored on a header served from a Brian Leone cross to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead and the winning score of the game.
Greene’s next goal came with just over eight minutes left to go in the game from a Luke Day goal. Day took a pass from River McCumiskey and redirected the ball past the Delhi-Davenport goal keeper and into the net for the score.
After winning the MAC, Greene now has a first round sectional bye and earned a second round home game on Saturday, October 24.

Cross Country

SAUQUOIT - Competing this Saturday, October 17, the Sherburne-Earlville cross country team raced in Sauquiot in the conference league championships.
Placing 14th overall as a team, the boys varsity team would beat out multiple schools over the course of the day. S-E’s Kenny Ulrich finished 55th overall out of over 100 runners and ran a 21:50 on the cold and rainy fall day. Competing for the Marauder boys were Caleb Larher and Tristain Rainford, both of which finished 67th and 81st, respectfully.
The girls team only sent two runners to compete this weekend. Miranda Wright and Emma Baker bore the responsibility for the Marauder women. Wright would finish 56th and ran a 27:59 while Baker would finish 78th and run a 32:58.
Both the Marauder boys and girls will compete again next Saturday, October 24, when they travel to Adirondack to compete in their invitational.

NORWICH - Hosting Oneonta on Friday, October 16, the Norwich girls varsity swim team lost 121-38.
Norwich would only win two of the day’s 12 events, capturing the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breaststroke. Maya Blaisure would win both events for Norwich, beating out the field. Norwich has their last two regular season meets this week and is beginning to prepare for the Sectional Meet on November 4.

ITHACA - Last Tuesday, October 13, the Norwich golf team sent three players to the STAC Championship at Cornell to compete and had two golfers place.
Junior Ryan Johnson placed second overall at the tournament, shooting a 73. Johnson tied with two other players for second and was only two strokes behind the overall leader.
Norwich’s Brenon Maynard also placed last Tuesday, shooting a 79. Maynard earned tenth place on the day. Also competing for Norwich was Alex Gage who did not place but finished with an 84 for the course.
All three players will have a chance to compete this spring at the Sectional Tournament in Cornell to go on to states.
