Norwich tennis moves on to State Tournament

BINGHAMTON - Competing in the state qualifying tournament on Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, the Norwich doubles team of Makenzie Maynard and Caroline Stewart finished in third placed and will travel to the state tournament this weekend.
In the first round of the tournament Maynard and Stewart beat out their opponents handily in straight sets to move on to the second round. Here they would face the Horseheads team of Tatum Benesh and Rachel Spermer. Maynard and Stewart took the match into a third set tiebreaker only to fall 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).
On the next day of the tournament the Norwich girls were fighting to get back to the third place match and would compete against a tough Union-Endicott team. Maynard and Stewart would still win and face Binghamton's Abby Combs and Allie Westbrook in the third place match. Winning in straight sets, the Norwich girls would take third and a spot in the state tournament.
"They're really starting to gel as a good doubles team," said Norwich coach John Stewart. "We took care of some teams from bigger schools and I'm really excited to see what they can do in states."
Maynard and Stewart will compete again this weekend at the state tournament in Latham starting on Friday, October 30.

Swimming

Norwich

JOHNSON CITY - The Norwich girls varsity swim team competed against Johnson City on Friday, October 23, and won 77-73.
The match was close all the way through and was tied going into the last relay where Norwich would clinch the win. The 400 freestyle relay team of Winter, Llewellyn, Wenzel, and Blaisure won the race in 4:17.62.
Norwich also swept the 50 free and the 100 free taking first, second, and third place in both events.
The Purple Tornado is now preparing for the sectional prelims on November, 4.

Sherburne-Earlville

THOUSAND ISLANDS - On Saturday, October 24, the Sherburne-Earlville girls varsity swim team traveled to Thousand Island high school to compete in the Frontier League Class B Championships.
S-E would ultimately place seventh out of ten schools, beating out South Lewis, Copenhagen, and Dolgville.
The Marauder women only won one race all meet with Liz Bachman taking the breaststroke. Bachman swam a pool, meet, and Frontier League record with a time of 1:13.41.

Soccer

Greene

GREENE - Playing Delhi/Davenport in the second round of the sectional tournament, the Greene boys varsity soccer team won 2-0 to advance to the semi-finals.
Greene scored early in the first half to start the day off, netting the first goal just 27 seconds into the match. Ben Kinney redirected a Luke Day pass into the goal for the Trojans.
Greene's second goal came from Brian Leone who took a direct kick with 34:40 on the clock. With Greene up 2-0 going into the second half, the game was all but over.
As 2-0 would be the final score, Greene would advance in the tournament to play Lansing on Wednesday, October 28 in the semi-finals.

Cross Country

Sherburne-Earlville

ADIRONDACK - Competing at the Adirondack invitational on Saturday, October 24, the Sherburne-Earlville boys and girls cross country teams came away with high hopes for the Section 3 tournament.
There were 125 total girls competing in the race on Saturday. S-E's Miranda Wright placed highest for her team, finishing 51. Also running for the girls were Emma Baker and Sage Westcott.
For the boys it was Kenny Ulrich who took the top spot for his team, finishing 66 out of 183 runners. The S-E boys placed 12 out of 15 teams, defeating Little Falls, Central Valley Academy, and Ogdensburg.
Many runners ran at their best or better than their personal bests on Saturday as Coach Anne Geary says that they are feeling good about sectionals on November 7 at VVS High School.
