LATHAM - The Norwich girls varsity tennis team sent the doubles team of Makenzie Maynard and Caroline Stewart to the state tournament in Latham this weekend. The pair would ultimately fall in the first round and end their state title run.
Maynard and Stewart fought hard to get as far as they did in the post season this year. Both girls competed primarily as singles players until the sectional tournament where they came together as a doubles team for the first time.
In the first round of the tournament the Norwich girls would face off against the team of Catherine Orgielewic and Alison Zerbib of Mamaroneck. Orgielewic and Zerbib would beat Maynard and Stewart in straight sets to move on in the tournament and send Maynard and Stewart home.
Maynard and Stewart finished their season as two of the top players for Norwich and placed second at the section four tournament in October.
Match results: Catherine Orgielewic & Alison Zerbib (Mamaroneck) d. Mackenzie Maynard & Caroline Stewart (Norwich) 6-1, 6-0.
