DA’s Office welcomes county’s first female Assistant District Attorney

NORWICH – Following another successful run and re-election of District Attorney Joseph A. McBride, the Chenango County District Attorney's Office welcomes its first female Assistant District Attorney.
“I always wanted to do law, I just wanted to help people and I thought that was the best way I could,” said Laura R. Parker newly appointed Assistant District Attorney.
An Assistant District Attorney position became available recently when Thomas L. Bowen Jr., the previous assistant left the office seeking employment elsewhere.
Parker was immediately targeted as a prime individual for the position, and subsequently began her first official day in the District Attorney's Office this past Wednesday, Nov. 4th.
“I started out in like middle school knowing I wanted to do law, but back then I wanted to do family court. Since doing all the internships I have done, and previously having an internship in the Bristol County District Attorney's Office in Massachusetts, I switched to wanting to work in the criminal court room,” said Parker.
Parker is a Norwich native who graduated from Norwich High School in 2006.
While in high school as a senior, Parker attended the DCMO BOCES New Vision Law and Government program where she got her first taste of law and the legal system.
This program that is run through BOCES, allows college bound seniors to rotate through various agencies and work places in an effort to help narrow down what they truly wish to do as a career. During her time in this BOCES program, Parker was actually mentored by District Attorney Joseph A. McBride for a two week period, little did she know that years later she would be employed in his office.
Following high school graduation, Parker attended Binghamton University, where she received her Bachelor's degree in 2010. Seeking further education, Parker attended Roger Williams University School of Law and received her Juris Doctorate degree in 2014. Parker has since passed the bar exam in both New York State and Massachusetts.
When home in Norwich in between semesters of college Parker recounted, “I have always just been interested in how the courtroom and lawyers operated. I actually wasn’t working but I took time and sat in on the Ramsaran trial, I loved it.”
“I am really excited to be back and work in the place I grew up in. I want to help and I have vested in the place we all live in,” said Parker.
Parker comes to the Chenango County District Attorney's Office with a background where she has received experience working with The New England Patriots legal group, and also gained experience at Harvard, in Rhode Island, and most recently from being employed for the past year in the Broome County District Attorney's Office.
“Being in the courtroom, I just get this confidence about me, I love it,” said Parker.
“We are all very excited to have Laura here as a part of our team to help bring justice to our county and community,” said McBride.
