Woman takes $63,000 in unlawful welfare
NORWICH – A City of Norwich resident has been arrested for allegedly unlawfully claiming over $60,000 in welfare money over a five-year span.
Investigators say 32-year-old Rhiannon Browne of Norwich was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 9 for welfare fraud in the second degree, a class C felony; and offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, a class E felony.
It is alleged that Browne failed to report a change in her household composition which resulted in her receiving $63,238 in assistance which she was not entitled to. The time frame for the alleged act was November 2008 through June 2014.
The Chenango County Welfare Fraud Investigation Unit assisted the Chenango County Sheriff's Office in the investigation.
The Chenango County Welfare Fraud Investigation Unit was unavailable for comment at the time of print Monday morning.
It is unknown how long the investigation was taking place, or how authorities were originally alerted of the fraud.
Browne was issued appearance tickets and released on her own recognizance.
