Eighth Annual Woofstock to hit the BSP stage Sunday
NORWICH – This weekend, one day for pooches and cool cats returns to the Blarney Stone Pub on Sunday from 1- 4 p.m. The event, fondly known as the Eight Annual Woofstock fundraiser, invites the community into the heart of Norwich for a leisurely afternoon of live music, munchies and information from the CSPCA board members.
Now in its eighth year, board members from the local chapter of the nonprofit have held the event with an emphasis on both awareness and fundraising efforts aimed at supporting the county's only animal shelter, located on East River Rd. in the Town of Norwich.
“Woofstock was created to raise funds in response to a couple of major animal cruelty cases that took place in Chenango County in 2007 and has successfully continued since then,” said organizer Courtney Sullivan.
“Musicians donate their time to helps support us, and our organizations board of directors prepares all food, so all the money raised at the event goes directly into the shelter – this is truly a ground-up fundraiser,” said Annette Clarke who serves as executive Director of CSPCA.
According to Clarke, Sarah and Mike Woods, owners of the host venue, also donate all tips from bar sales to the nonprofit.
Founded in 1907, Chenango SPCA (CSPCA) is a nationally recognized, open-admission animal shelter that provides care for lost and homeless pets, adopts pets to new homes, and educates families and the community about the needs of companion animals.
“This year, the three local bands who have graciously donated their services are Tumbleweed Highway, Mike Davis and Trust Fall—all very talented local acts who believe in the mission of CSPCA,” said Clarke.
While the event is technically free, those attending are encouraged to give a good will donation at the door.
Likewise, a special quilt crafted and donated by Sew Nice in Norwich will be raffled off with tickets available for 1$ each or 6 for $5.
A bit of a popular keepsake in its own right, tee shirts and hoodies designed by local Ann Coe and printed by Fine Line Graphics in Norwich will be available for purchase as well.
“All funds generated from the event will go to the care of our animals, said Clarke. “It costs us approximately $1000 per day to run the shelter–equating to over $360,000 annually. While Woofstock seems like a small event, we have to raise that money though a series of events year round; and every little bit helps.”
To put things in perspective, Clarke revealed that the shelter uses over 40,000 of cat litter per year.
The CSPCA will host its next fundraising effort on Feb. 13, 2016 when it will host the Kentucky Derby-inspired Fur Ball at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich.
Clarke also indicated that the nonprofits largest fundraiser – Music in the Park at General Clinton in Bainbridge – will feature national headline The Marshal Tucker Band in 2016.
Said Clarke, “People should mark their calendars for our future events, and come out this weekend for a great time that benefits a great cause.”
