Two students missing, school ‘lockout’ Wednesday
AFTON – The Afton Central School was in a lockout for all of Wednesday as a result of two missing high school students.
According to Lieutenant Richard Cobb with the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, the Afton Central School requested security Tuesday.
A missing persons case was handled by the New York State Police, who at press time did not return a call for comment.
According to reports, two students went missing Tuesday night and unconfirmed information was provided to the school that the students may have had weapons.
Wednesday’s after school were cancelled, it is unclear if they will be cancelled again today.
The lockout Wednesday was said to have been precautionary. School officials had a meeting set for Thursday morning to determine whether or not the lockout would continue today.
With a lockout, no one is permitted to enter or leave the building without an escort.
With regard to CCSO providing security at the school again today, Cobb said, “At this point the school has not asked for it. That could change.”
The Evening Sun is awaiting further comment from both the New York State Police regarding the missing children, and the Afton Central School regarding the status of the lockout. This story will be updated as information is received.
