Annual Norwich Turkey Trot set for another year
NORWICH - This Sunday, November 22, marks the 34th year of the Norwich Family YMCA’s Turkey Trot. This year’s race is expected to gather over 550 runners for the annual 5K.
With a start time of 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, the race is open for any runner or walker of any age. “This year we have runners from ages nine to 89 in the race,” said Norwich YMCA’s Fitness Director Shannon Gawronski. “We’ll get runners from all over to come and compete here.”
As always, volunteers have come from far and wide to help make sure the event runs smoothly. Gawronski says that their primary concern this year, as it is every year is the safety of the runners. “Our biggest job is to keep the runners safe on the course,” Gawronski said. “The volunteers will be helping make sure that everyone stays on course as well as stays safe.”
This year’s race will start at Mechanic Street and North Broad Street in front of the YMCA and will travel on North Broad Street, eventually looping around from Birdsall and Silver Street back on to North Broad to finish. The racers will be tracked through chip timing to assure that their times are accurate. An electronic chip is placed inside each racer’s “bib” that will begin timing as soon as the race begins and will stop as soon as they cross the finish line.
This year’s top male and female finishers will receive a $100 prize to Olympia Sports as well as other swag from local sponsors. “I want to extend a thanks to all of our sponsors this year and every year for all of the donations and support that they have given us throughout the years,” said Gawronski.
This year’s sponsors include Arby’s, Tops, Chobani, The Trophy Guy & Sports Connection, The Pennysaver, The Evening Sun, Burrell’s Excavating Inc., Park Place Sports Bar & Grill, Stewart’s Shops, Matthews Auto Group, Chenango Massage Therapy, Save A Lot, The Rooney Family, McCredy Motors Inc., Broad Street United Methodist Church, ND Distribution, Wilson Funeral Home, Electron Coil Inc., Reese-Marshall Oil Company, Swelby, SFCU, and Fine Line Graphics for making the t-shirts that all runners and volunteers receive.
This year all participants are encouraged to bring a non perishable food item to support local food pantries. Registration for the race is currently open and will continue until 12:00 p.m. on race day. “This is always a fun event for everyone involved,” Gawronski said. “The weather is looking good for this weekend so we’re hoping to have a great turnout and looking forward to the race.”
