FIRST Team #145 awarded sustaining grant from TechValley

NORWICH—On Nov. 11, 2015 in Malta, NY the Chenango County FIRST Team #145 was awarded a $5,000 New York Tech Valley FIRST Sponsors’ grant award.
FIRST Programs offer students a one of a kind opportunity to design and build robots alongside mentors from their communities.
Likewise, these engineers-in-training take their creations to compete in tournaments where teams receive recognition for design excellence, sportsmanship, teamwork, and where their creativity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills are celebrated.
Programs such as FIRST Robotics showcase a true investment in the education of students, teaching them how to become producers of new technology—not just consumers.
“The pressure of building an effective robot that you are proud of in just six weeks and the camaraderie that’s established with your teammates and mentors is an indescribable feeling you won’t get anywhere else,” said Vinny Loscavio, a senior from Norwich.
Conor Ryan, a freshman at Sherburne–Earlville high school said that he joined FIRST because “building robots is fun; and it will help get me into college.”
In the past, grant funding by local foundations such as The Greater Norwich Foundation, The Otis Thompson Foundation, the Anna L. Mabey Foundation, the Peptis Foundation, the American Legion have helped this program continue to be an affordable opportunity to students within our communities.
Now, with this newest grant award New York Tech Valley, in addition to some donations from other individual businesses and organizations, the team can rest assured in knowing that it will be there next year.
S-E freshmen Romeo Rapp and Josh Combs indicated that they both joined FIRST with their future career paths in mind, and that the FIRST and STEM programs better position them for “careers in engineering for when they go to college.”
“Over my 12 years as a parent and mentor with Team 145, I’ve seen first-hand the impact the program has on the lives of young people,” said Team Leader Dave Sheldon. “Each year, the experience helps these young adults channel their passions into real world opportunities and career plans—this is without doubt, one of the best experiential learning opportunities for today’s youth.”
New York Tech Valley FIRST Sponsors combined their efforts to make these grants possible. Sponsors include GLOBAL FOUNDRIES, GE, ASML, M+W Group, KLA-Tencor, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Time Warner, National Grid, Mattson Technology, Lam Research, Applied Materials, Turner Construction, SCREEN USA, Wonik IPS and PDF Solutions.
These companies share a need for addressing the challenges of forging the workforce needed to succeed in the global economy.
