Zumbathon fundraiser set to help Toys for Tots

NORWICH – One local woman’s efforts are combining the mission of Toys for Tots with the promotion of children’s health and wellness by way of a unique fundraiser for the local chapter of the Toys for Tots organization.

Maria Fernandez, a local Zumba instructor and volunteer for Toys for Tots of Chenango County, will lead a three-hour long “Zumbathon” and Chinese auction from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at 1-11 Lee St. in the City of Norwich. Proceeds will go directly toward Toys for Tots. People of all ages are invited.

Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various styles of dance performed to music. Fernandez says that in addition to being a great workout, Zumba is the perfect way to engage kids in exercise.

“I think it’s important that we as a community get together to help Toys for Tots – which is an excellent organization – get gifts to those who might not otherwise get them,” said Fernandez. “At the same token, I love that kids be involved with exercise, and Zumba is one of the best ways to do it because it fools them into dancing which is exercising.”

There is a $10 entry fee for the event; however, anyone who brings a toy to donate need only pay half the price.
