County basketball wins big over weekend

Sherburne-Earlville

SHERBURNE - In a rout against league opponent Canastota, the Sherburne-Earlville girls' varsity basketball team won 70-28.
On Friday, December 18, S-E got another win after hosting Canastota. The visitors kept it close through the first half after a 10-9 first quarter and a 16-12 second quarter, both in favor of S-E.
It wasn't until the third quarter until the Marauders hit their stride. S-E, led again by Lily Berg, put up 31 points in the third quarter and shut out Canastota.
Berg led the team with 21 total points and had a lot of help from the rest of her team. Both Miranda Wright and Savannah Irwin scored 11 on their way to another win.
The fourth quarter ended as S-E scored 13 more to bring their total to 70 on the night.

Bainbridge-Guilford

AFTON - Traveling to Afton on Friday, December 18, the Bainbridge-Guilford boys’ varsity basketball team defeated their neighbors down the road 52-39.
The Bobcats had a slow start but eventually found their stride mid-way through the game. The first quarter ended with Afton up 9-7 on B-G as their defense kept the visiting team away from the basket. It wasn’t until the second quarter when B-G began to get their shots to fall.
Up 20-19 coming out of the locker room and into the second half, B-G fired on all cylinders and began to click on offense and defense. Sean Jones scored nine of B-G’s 19 points in the third on his way to a 16 point game. The only player to score more than Jones was his team mate Trevor Halaquist who earned 20 on the night.
Now with a 39-28 point lead, B-G came into the third quarter with the momentum that they needed to win. The two teams would trade baskets until the final whistle and the game would end with B-G up 52-39 as the Bobcats earned another win.

Unadilla Valley

NEW BERLIN - Hosting Delhi on Friday, December 18, the UV girls’ varsity basketball team would lose a tough game 46-25.
The first quarter would see Delhi earn the lead that they would keep through the majority of the game. Scoring 11 to UV’s five in the first quarter, Delhi clamped down on defense and kept UV away from the basket and behind most of the game.
It was UV in the second quarter who kept Delhi at by, scoring seven and only alowing 10 to decrease Delhi’s lead. UV was led by Sierra Badger in their loss. Badger earned seven of her team’s 25 total points.
The second half went much of the same for UV, as they couldn’t quite find their stride on offense. On the other hand Delhi couldn’t get many shots to fall either in the third quarter; but finally wore down UV in the fourth to finish with a 17 point fourth quarter. Delhi’s final push gave the game its final score of 46-25 on the visitors the win.

Gilbertsville-Mount Upton

GILBERTSVILLE - Playing their first of two games this weekend, the GMU girls’ varsity basketball team hosted Harpursville on Friday, December 18. GMU would fall 33-26 to Harpursville.
GMU was down most of the game against Harpursville, going into the locker room down 23-10 at the half.
The second half wasn’t much different as Harpursville kept pressure up against the GMU defense. Although GMU would score 16 to Harpursville’s 10 in the second half, GMU’s comeback fell short as they lost 33-26.

UNATEGO - In their second game in two days, the GMU girls lost when they traveled to Unatego on Saturday, December 19.
Unatego’s defense smothered GMU throughout the game, holding them to only 15 total points. In the first half Unatego out-scored their opponents 19-2 and kept it up through the second half.
The third quarter ended with Unatego up 32 to GMU’s eight points as the game was out of reach for the visitors. After an eight to seven quarter in favor of Unatego the game ended with a final score of 40-15 in favor of Unatego.

Wrestling

Norwich

OWEGO - The Norwich wrestling team competed in the Owego duals tournament this weekend, wrestling nine dual meets in two days. Norwich would go 8-1 on the weekend and take second place in the tournament.
Norwich won eight of their nine dual meets this weekend with wins over teams such as Middletown, Oxford, Susqehanna Valley, and Ithaca. The Purple Tornado’s single loss came against Vestal as they would fall 45-36.
Norwich had three wrestlers go undefeated on the weekend. Norwich’s Eli Rodruigez, Cole Rifanburg, and Dalen Geislinger all went 9-0 for the tournament, helping their team on their way to a second place victory.
