NEW YORK MILLS - Traveling to New York Mills, yesterday, December 21, the S-E girls’ varsity basketball came from behind to win big.
Down most of the game, the Marauder girls had to fight hard to keep themselves in the game. The first quarter ended with the girls down by just one, but the second quarter would see New York Mills play their best basketball. The home team scored 26 on the back on their team’s high scorer Cassidy Albright. Albright had 19 of her 38 total points during the second.
Coming out of the locker room at half time S-E was down 40-28 and knew that they needed to make a change. In the third they decreased New York Mills lead by one point, but the fourth quarter saw them play their best basketball.
S-E stepped it up on defense to hold the home team to only eight points in the fourth quarter, while they shot lights out scoring 25.
The Marauder women were only down by two with 1:33 left to play. It was then that Savannah Irwin hit a three to give S-E the lead. The rest of Irwin’s team mates followed her lead and sunk key baskets to give themselves some much needed breathing room. Lily Berg and Miranda Wright both were instrumental in sealing their victory late as they gave the game its final score of 74-68.

BAINBRIDGE - Hosting Gilbertsville-Mount Upton, the B-G boys’ varsity basketball team lost a heart-breaker 59-52.
The B-G boys came out of the gate fired up and scored 20 on their opponent early, while holding GMU to just 10. B-G’s high scorer Sean Jones earned four of his 15 total points in the first quarter.
The difference was like day and night in the second quarter for B-G as they couldn’t get any shots to fall, only recording two field goals and two free throws for just eight points. Though still up because of their first quarter run, B-G seemed to be in trouble.
GMU began to step up their play coming out of the locker room in the second half, scoring 19 in the third while holding the host team to just 11. B-G was now playing from behind as they were down 41-39 going into the final eight minutes. GMU’s defense proved to be too much for B-G as they held on for the win 59-52 in the final minutes.

GREENE - Fighting for a tough game against Deposit, the Greene boys’ varsity basketball got a win yesterday, December 21, 56-45.
Things would go the right way for the Trojans all game yesterday, starting off with a 20-11 first quarter that would give them the lead that would eventually win them the game. Greene’s Luke Day scored eight of Greene’s 20, and his eventual 19, in the first quarter to kick things off.
In the second, Greene was down a bit as it seemed that Deposit had clamped down on defense, keeping Greene to only six points while scoring 10 of their own. Greene’s lead had now shrunk to just five.
Deposit would continue to stop the Trojans and keep Greene’s lead to just five at the end of the third. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when Greene hit their stride again, scoring 13 on offense and making some key stops on defense to hold Deposit to just eight.
Day and company would finish the quarter strong, only missing one free throw to end the game for their team and give the game its final score, 56-45.

NEW BERLIN - In a very defensive game, the UV girls’ varsity basketball team hosted Walton, Monday, December 21, and won 37-29.
The Storm girls did their best to keep Walton away from the basket and out of scoring position most of the game. After a tough first quarter UV would begin to build a lead. Sierra Badger and Julia Ogelsby combined to score six of their 10 first quarter points on their way to victory. Both girls would end the night with 14 points.
The second quarter was all Walton, as the visitors kept UV to just one point and scored eight themselves.
It wasn’t until the second half when UV began to see some momentum. The Storm earned 12 points in the third and 14 in the fourth to put themselves out of reach for the visiting team. UV would hold Walton to single didget points in both the third and fourth quarters on their way to their 37-29 victory.

EARLVILLE - In a Route 12 match-up the Sherburne-Earlville varsity bowling team took on Norwich. The S-E boys would shut out Norwich to stay perfect, 5-0.
Bowling the high match of the night was S-E’s Zack Miles. Miles bowled a 664 three game set with a 231 high. S-E’s Will Philhower bowled the high single game of the night with a 236.
For Norwich it was Dustin Rifanburg who bowled thier high set. Rifanburg bowled a 630 match with a 234 high single game.

CORTLAND - Norwich’s indoor track team is starting off with a record breaking season. After David Bernstein broke the school record and Section Four record in the weight throw at their last meet, this week Ben Ericksen shattered the school record for the 3200 M run.
Ericksen broke the now three year old record of 10:18 held by Norwich graduate Jamie Zieno at their meet at SUNY Cortland this Saturday, December 19. Ericksen ran a 10:13.45 for the two mile race, beating out Zieno’s record of 10:18. Ericksen placed second at the tournament.
The Purple Tornado also had multiple athletes place in the tournament. In the shot put, Thomas Reilly and David Bernstein placed first and second, respectfully. Reilly threw a 48’07.50’’ for first place while Bernstein came in just behind him with a 46’03’’ for second. Norwich’s Trevor McCarthy also placed ninth in the shot put with a 35’07.50’’ throw.
For the girls, Katelyn Shaver placed third in the shot put with a 35’11.50’’ throw. Competing in the long jump was Marysa Campbell. Campbell lept 14’09.50’’ for sixth place in the meet.
