GREENE - The Greene Lady Trojans’ record in MAC play remains unblemished as they improve to 6-0 in the division after a 36-25 victory at home versus Walton on Wednesday night.
The Walton Warriors jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead to start the game, but Greene would respond with a 9-0 run of their own to take the lead to end the first quarter. Greene would maintain that lead for the remainder of the game.
“In the first quarter we talked about being more aggressive defensively,” said Greene Head Coach Dave Gorton, “and then on offense, we had been really slow and too deliberate with the ball. After we started moving the ball a little better, we got some better shots. Missed some easy ones, but, we got better shots.”
Greene would go into the half with a 17-15 lead triggered by 6 first-half points from 8th grader Emma Smith.
The Trojans came out strong to start the second half, allowing only 2 points in the first 7 minutes of play in the third quarter.
“Defense has been our best attribute, our defensive effort this season has been really good,” Coach Gorton said. “We’ve had a lot of games where we’ve held teams in the low-20s. We think if we keep teams at 25 points or below, we’ll be able to win most games.”
Greene Sophomore Alyssa Sands scored 7 of her game-high 13 points in the fourth quarter to help clinch the win. The team’s second leading scorer was Senior Katie Carey with 12 points.
“[Alyssa and Katie] are both very good offensive players. We know they’re capable of scoring 20 points for us on any given night,” said Coach Gorton. “And they’re both very unselfish. They understand the game, and they make their teammates better at the game.”
The win moves the Lady Trojans to 9-3 overall on the season. They will take on the Hancock Wildcats on Friday night at Greene High School. Tip-off is at 7:15 p.m.
