Blackhawks record last second victory
OXFORD – In a game that came down to the wire, the Oxford Blackhawk’s men’s varsity basketball team came out victors against Deposit 38-37 last night.
With six seconds left in regulation, Deposit’s David Schaeffer was fouled on a shot attempt and consequentially made both resulting free throws to put his team up 37-36. Oxford ran a play where Harry Oliver threw a long pass to Nick Neer, who hit the lay-up and put his team in the lead in the dying seconds. Deposit didn’t get a shot off after the inbounds and Oxford came away with the last second win.
Although it was a low scoring affair, the game was tightly contested, and neither team held more than a single-digit lead throughout.
Things heated up going into the fourth quarter. Down 26-21 to begin the quarter, the Blackhawks quickly fell behind 28-22 before Kevin Davis pulled them back within three after draining a three pointer. On the next play, Davis stole the ball and drained another three to bring Oxford level. The two teams continued to battle back and forth until the waning moments when Neer’s shot sealed the win for Oxford.
Best on the night for the Blackhawks was Kevin Davis, who had a game-high 10 points. Deposit’s Ron Ballard finished as the game’s top scorer with 13.
After this close encounter, Oxford travels to Delhi next Tuesday night in an attempt to emulate their performance.
