Jack Buell takes home first at Wrangle on the Plains
SHENENDEHOWA – Sherburne-Earlville and Greene Central high school decided to make the trip to Shenendehowa for the annual Wrangle on the Plains wrestling tournament.
S-E would only elect to bring 195-pound Jack Buell, as the rest of the Marauders were in Mount Markham at The Mustang Duels. While the Trojans would bring three of their own; Ryan Castle at 132-pounds, Nate Banks at 152-pounds, and Braxton Howell at 195-pounds.
This year’s tournament was set up in a round robin format, consisting of a multitude of top-notch wrestlers at each weight class.
“He did real well, he’s wrestling real solid right now and he didn’t get banged up either,” said Sherburne head coach Bim Palmer regarding Jack Buell’s performance. “It was a round robin tournament and that’s why went to it because I knew usually when we bring Jack to tournaments he gets one or two matches only, and he could get more this way against some quality kids.”
Buell would see five matches throughout the tournament, all of them going in his favor en route to a 5-0 finish winning the title at 195-pounds.
“Jack was in the elite division so all the kids he wrestled had sectional criteria or a placed in sectionals before,” said Palmer.
Buell would tally three pins over opponents, only seeing two matches decided by points.
In the marquee matchup of two Chenango County top wrestlers, Buell faced off against Greene’s Braxton Howell; Buell earned the pin over Howell just 2:14 into the matchup.
“Jack wadded him up,” said Palmer.
Palmer went on to explain, “He’s not a show boater though, he shows no emotion win or lose. I think he has won two or three sportsmanship awards in the last three years. He’ll beat the hell out of you, but then he’ll be right there to help you back up to your feet.”
Buell would finish 5-0 in the weight class earning the first place finish with Howell finishing in third place, 3-2 on the day, earning three pins of his own.
Buell’s closest matchup of the day came against Amsterdam’s Marcus Torres. Buell subsequently dominated this matchup, winning 11-3.
“I’m one of those coaches where I don’t really worry about who we’re wrestling next, I just get the kid prepared and it doesn’t matter who we’re wrestling next we just got a go to work,” said Palmer.
Greene’s Ryan Castle at 132-pounds would earn a fourth place finish in his weight class, going 4-3 on the day. With Greene’s Nate Banks at 152-pounds taking home a third place finish. Banks would be edged from a second place finish in the tournament due to a nail-biting loss to Shenendehowa’s Gabe Cruz at 7-6.
