Showdown of state ranked teams
CORTLAND – Friday afternoon saw two top state ranked wrestling squads square off on in neutral territory, with Adirondack coming out on top winning, 48-29.
Both currently in the top five for small schools, BGAH sits at a fifth while section III’s Adirondack is ranked third. This would mark only the second team loss for the Bears in the 2015-2016 season.
With the duel meet starting at 195-pounds this past Friday evening, BGAH found themselves exchanging quick pins early on, while surrendering two forfeit losses to Adirondack within the first five matches, setting them at a team score of 12-18.
Chris Cirigliano of BGAH would earn a 7-1 victory over Sean Banks of Adirondack at 113-pounds, inching the team score to 15-18. This slight lead would be widened when BGAH gave up yet another forfeit at 120-pounds, moving the score to 24-15.
Following the third forfeit at 120-pounds, Adirondack would battle to earn three more pin fall wins at 126, 132, and 138-pounds putting them in a commanding lead, before BGAH’s Ben Bivar could slow the Wildcats down.
Bivar would earn his win at 145-pounds winning 7-1 as well over Adirondack’s Brendan Martin.
BGAH standouts Brody Oleksak, Chris Cirigliano, Ben Bivar, Shane Hoover, Madison Hoover, Austin Carr, and Dylan Mondore would all earn wins on the night.
Despite winning 7 of the 15 matchups, the team score at the end of the evening would not display the close matchup, due to BGAH only securing two pins on the night and surrendering three forfeits.
The Adirondack Wildcats left Cortland State College with a win at 48-29, effectively handing BGAH their second loss on the season. At the time of this duel meet BGAH held a record of 13-2, while Adirondack improved to 23-7.
BGAH was on the road again the very next day, on Saturday, Jan. 30 for the John Wake Dual Meet Tournament at Delhi. BGAH would subsequently go 4-0 in the duel meet tournament winning the first place team prize. A write up will appear in Tuesday’s edition of The Evening Sun.
