BAINBRIDGE– A second half surge by the visiting Afton Crimson Knights saw them on the winning end of a close 6-point game, defeating Bainbridge-Guilford at home 70-64.
The Monday evening matchup on Feb. 1, began in favor of The BG who jumped out to an early lead at 15-5 at one point mid-way through the first quarter. This early lead for BG was in part due to BG’s number 5, Trevor Halaquist.
Halaquist would net 11 of his 30-points on the night within the first quarter, many points coming off of breakaway layups. Despite a slow start, Afton would not sit by idly, as they kept the game close by the end of the first, only trailing 1-point, down 17-16. BG would pull away slightly in the second to gain 37-25 lead over Afton at the half.
Halaquist’s dominate first half, that included 20-points and four 3-point baskets, impressive as it was, managed to be overshadowed in the second half by the play of Afton’s number 24, Conor Graven-Briggs. Graven-Briggs who bucketed an impressive four 3-point shots in the first half, and had another six in the second half en route to a 40-point total on the night.
Heading into the final quarter of play, Afton would hold the slight 2-point lead over the Bobcats at 52-50.
The Bobcats would ultimately get themselves into some foul trouble in the fourth, surrendering 5-points by way of fouls to The Crimson Knights. This ultimately helped Afton outscore BG 18-14, and pull away the 6-point win, 70- 64.
Trevor Halaquist was the lead scorer for The Bobcats, earning 30-points, 18-points off of his six 3-point baskets.
Conor Graven-Briggs was the games leading scorer at 40-points, with ten 3-pointers. Followed closely by his teammate Kyle Hinman, number 40, who managed 22-points on the night.
Bainbridge is back at home this coming Wednesday, Feb. 3, against Unadilla Valley at 7:15 p.m.
