BGAH goes undefeated at first ever John Wake Duels
DELHI – The Bears coming off only their second loss of the season to state ranked Adirondack last Friday, Jan. 29. wasted no time wallowing in a loss, going 4-0 the very next day.
This past Saturday Jan. 30, the very next day, The Bears traveled to Delhi for the first ever John Wake Duels.
This duel meet, round robin style tournament featured a five team roster of, BGAH, Walton-Delhi, Morrisville-Eaton, Unatego, and Onteora.
BGAH, the only Chenango County based team went into the tournament, ranked fifth in the state for small schools, something no other team at this tournament had the credentials to say.
Despite these lofty credentials and ultimately going undefeated, BGAH did see some stout competition when it came to Walton-Delhi and Morrisville-Eaton.
BGAH faced Walton-Delhi in the very first round, edging them by a mere 3-points, 39-36. Exchanging one forfeit each in the matchup set up 13 matches. BGAH found itself in hole late at 36-27. It was the two heavyweights, Mitchell Weist at 220-pounds and Dylan Mondore at 285-pounds, who saved the day for The Bears earning back-to-back quick pins pulling off a twelve point swing to win the match.
It should be noted that this first duel meet ended up being the most important as BGAH would hand Walton-Delhi their only loss on the day, as they finished 3-1.
The second round would not be close in any regards as BGAH blew out Onteora 70-9, allowing only one Onteora wrestler to earn a win on the day.
The third round was another test for the state ranked Bears, as they once again found themselves down late again 36-27, this time to against Morrisville-Eaton. BGAH’s Dylan Mondore at 285-pounds would once again produce a pin for his team. Dylan Decker for BGAH at 99-pounds would receive a forfeit, followed by standout Brody Oleksak at 106-pounds would end the duel meet with a 10-0 shutout win over Colin Shelton of Morrisville-Eaton. BGAH would come away with another close win at 43-36.
The fourth round proved to be another blowout in favor of The Bears who would cruise to 69-17 win over Unatego. BGAH would rest some of their roster, while still only allowing one Unatego wrestler to earn a win.
The fifth round served as a bye for BGAH who would enjoy a break before accepting the first place team award.
“Great team effort as we had individuals step in for injured guys, and they performed well,” said BGAH head coach Brandon MacNaught.
The following wrestlers would go undefeated during the duel meet tournament: Chris Cirigliano, Brody Oleksak, Shane Hoover, Madison Hoover, Austin Carr, and Dylan Mondore.
