VERONA - The Norwich boys varsity basketball team continued their winning ways in a 63-48 victory over the Red Devils of Vernon- Verona-Sherill on Tuesday night.
Norwich fell down by 10 points early but would then climb back within one to enter the halftime break.
“We had a slow start, we had some good looks but we just couldn’t get anything to fall,” said Norwich Head Coach Brian Collier. “Carlos [Ithier] had some great looks that just rimmed out. But in the second half, he got a couple quick mid-range jumpers to go in, and the floodgates opened from there.”
Carlos Ithier’s hot-hand was the difference in the sec- ond half as he scored 21 of his 26 points and only missed one shot.
Jordan Vinal and Chris Jeffrey were also important contributors for the Tornado. Jeffrey had 12 points and 9 rebounds, while Vinal had a solid all around output with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.
After three quarters of play, Norwich was able to take a three point lead. The Tornado continued to up the ante in the fourth quarter when they would score 22 points while holding the Red Devils to just three made baskets.
“The strong defensive effort in the fourth was a result of Cameron Edwards, Matt Parrella, and Jordan Vinal shutting down their big guys,” said Coach Collier, “Especially [Davey Moffet] who usually aver- ages 25 points per game. Tonight we held him to 10.”
The win takes the Tornado to 13-1 overall on the sea- son. Norwich will honor their seniors on Friday night in a rivalry matchup versus Oneonta. Tip-off is at 7:45 p.m.
