Lady Marauders clinch league title with win on senior night

SHERBURNE– The lady Marauders wasted no time getting right to business in last nights rescheduled game against The Canastota lady Raiders for senior night, winning 61-19.
Prior to tip-off, S-E recognized their four graduating seniors as well as the two seniors from the Canastota ball club.
S-E congratulated number 3, Morgan Simpson; number 14, Savannah Irwin; number 21, Crystal Beckwith; and number 31, Lilly Berg. It should be noted that all four seniors did start for S-E on the night.
The tandem of Irwin and Berg will greatly be missed as both athletes have recently joined the 1,000-point club for S-E, while ranking second and first respectively, in all time leading scorers for lady Marauders.
Jumping out to an early lead at 11-0, Irwin and Berg would be the only athletes on the court to score for almost the entire first quarter.
“I am very proud of the entire team and also happy for our seniors. They have put a lot of time an dedication in, so it's pretty special for them,” said S-E head coach Karen Mulligan.
This lead was no fluke, due to erratic passing from The Raiders as well as superb rebounding by The Marauders, the cruised to a 30-12 score in the first half.
After the halftime break the S-E girls continued to net the ball time and time again, while continuing to play excellent defensive. Canastota was only allowed to score 3-points in the third quarter, followed by an additional 4-points in the final quarter of play.
“When we sat down as a team in the preseason, one of our goals was to win the league. Everyone was pretty excited tonight,” said Mulligan.
With the commanding win on senior night, S-E has now clinched the CSC-I league title with a 7-0 league record and a 14-4 overall record.
S-E senior Lilly Berg 11 rebounds , 4 blocks, and netted a team high 20-points. Lexi Elderkin was second in scoring with 11-points on the night followed by senior Savannah Irwin who 10-points and 6 assists.
The lady Marauders will play Adirondack tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 5, in Adirondack at 6 p.m. for their final regular season game.
