Lady Trojans forfeit division lead to Delhi
GREENE – Delhi spoiled the Greene women’s varsity basketball Senior night and also stole first place in the division last Tuesday night, Feb. 2, as they triumphed on a score line of 32-23.
The Trojan’s struggled offensively from the get-go, and only managed to muster up two points in the first quarter.
“We were a bit emotional to start the game and it took us time to settle into the flow,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton.
Their play improved in the second, but the Bulldogs defense remained unyielding. At the half-time break, Delhi held an eight-point lead, 16-8.
The defensive intensity switched its attention to the offensive end in the third quarter, as both teams put up double-digit scores. However, it was a case of too little, too late for the Trojans, as Delhi ran out as the eventual winners by a comfortable 11-point margin.
“The girls played well defensively, but we struggled on offense with shot selection and turnovers,” said Gorton.
Best in the loss for Greene was Katie Carey, who scored nine on the night, while Logan Bruce finished as the Bulldogs top scorer, also nailing nine points.
Now standing at 12-5 overall, 9-2 in their division, the Trojan’s still remain a force to be reckoned with. They will be hoping to bounce back from this major loss with a victory against their next opponents, Bainbridge-Guilford, in the league semi-final, tomorrow Friday, Feb. 5.
