Buell wins section III Class C Tournament

ADIRONDACK – The top ranked team in Section III would claim the show as they rolled over the competition to a team finish at first with 271 points. Adirondack boasted four wrestlers win first place with an additional four earn second place finishes.
Sherburne-Earlville ultimately placed seventh as a team with 99-points, as they faced tough competition throughout.
Out of the thirteen athletes that The Marauders brought to the tournament this past Saturday Feb. 6, there would be six who emerged at the end of the day to stand on the podium for the awards ceremony.
Jack Buell top ranked 195-pound wrestler from Sherburne-Earlville claimed yet another title to add to the collection as he received bye’s all the way to the semi-finals, only to pin his opponent Kris Rutherford of Canandaigua in :45 seconds. Buell would earn first place for defeating Kevin Fraga of Cazenovia by pin just 30 seconds into the seconds period at 2:30.
SE’s Hunter Owen at 152-pounds came in as the tournament’s one seed at that weight. After pinning both his opponents en route to the finals matchup against Dylan Stellmack of Onondaga. Owen would battle but ultimately lose to Stellmack 10-7, earning the second place finish.
Darren Knapp at 170-pounds lost an early bout to Trevor Snow of General Brown at 11-2. Knapp would battle back through wrestle backs to earn a solid third place finish over Noah Roes of Lowville with a pin at 1:43.
At the 145-pound slot Vinny Albertina suffered a semi-finals loss to Adirondack’s top seeded Harry Roberts at 6-0. Albertina would come back to wrestle for the third place finish, losing to Caleb Mayer of Lowville once again by a score of 6-0, placing fourth.
Also at the 145-pound slot Bailey Walzer would wrestle his way back to finish fifth and earn a spot on the podium. Walzer would lose to top ranked Harry Roberts of Adirondack in the quarterfinals, one round before Roberts defeated teammate Albertina. Walzer would battle back to defeat Ricci Natali of General Brown at a 12-6 score.
Heavyweight Cole Mikalunas at 285-pounds would fight his way to the semi-finals only to suffer an early pin to the top seed in that weight, Jacob Beckwith of General Brown. Mikalunas however, was not finished as he fought down to the wire in an attempt to earn third place against Owen Albanese of Canastota. Mikalunas would lose a close match at 5-2 to claim the fourth place finish.
The seeding will soon be complete and ready for release on all wrestlers as they prepare for the upcoming Section III Tournament.
