ONEONTA - It was a tale of two halves for the Greene Trojans and senior Jordan Harrington in the Midstate Athletic Conference championship game against Sidney on Saturday night.
After a low scoring first two quarters where the Trojans would fall behind Sidney 23-17, Greene Head Coach Chris Rice said that his team knew it was time to change their approach.
“Sidney slowed down our game in the first half,” said Coach Rice. “We were not pushing the ball or getting the transition shots we were looking for, and that really played into our game plan. But we held our poise, and our mental toughness and physical conditioning paid off.”
To start the third quarter, the Trojans set the tone by beginning with a 7-0 run to take the lead over the Warriors. Jordan Harrington, who had scored only one point in the first half, erupted for the Trojans scoring 17 points on eight field goals in the second half. Senior Luke Day also had a day, tacking on another 15 points for Greene.
Coach Rice said, “In the second half, Jordan Harrington took over scoring, Coy Austin played some great defense off the bench, Joey Miranda and Mitchell Walters combined for eight blocks and 12 rebounds, and Luke Erickson and Luke Day hit some big free throws to seal the game at the end. The boys worked hard and showed how hard work can pay off.”
The win grants the Greene boys their first league championship in over 50 years and their first ever MAC title. The Trojans will host the Groton Indians on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Section IV Class C tournament. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
