STOP DWI offers training on DRE callouts

NORWICH – Noting the need for training among local police officers, the Chenango County STOP DWI program is coordinating a seminar for police agencies and other public entities that explains the processes and procedures of Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) callouts.
Prompted by the Chenango County Traffic and Safety Board, STOP DWI is soliciting interest from local departments to hold the training program. According to STOP DWI Coordinator Kathy Clemens, the four-hour workshop will help police determine when a DRE is needed, and explain how to go about calling a DRE to the scene when the time’s appropriate.
“We do have a drug problem in Chenango County,” said Clemens. “This training will help officers identify the need for a DRE.”
STOP DWI plans to offer the training seminar this spring. The department’s working with the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office and an outside DRE expert to facilitate the seminar which Clemens said will help police and other public servants better understand the role of the DRE.
Topics to be covered include test refusal hearings from a prosecution and legal perspective, test refusal hearings from a police perspective, and the intended role of a DRE officer.
“We’re organizing the training now,” she added. “We’re just looking for feedback from police agencies.”
Clemens is also soliciting interest in participation from other public entities, including the Probation Department, the Department of Social Services, Behavioral Health, youth and aging service programs, schools, and even local libraries.
“The last time we did training of this type, librarians of the four-county librarian system wanted to attend because they want to know when to call someone if they see something that’s questionable,” Clemens said.
STOP DWI is currently seeking input from local agencies concerning times and dates that training should be held. Potential dates include: March 31; April 5; April 7; May 2; and May 6.
