New York State Trooper rescued a suspect from ice-covered lake
BARKER – On Feb. 27, New York State Trooper Michael Gardner made a miraculous effort in the recovery of an on the run suspect, as he and another passing motorist pulled the suspects body from an ice-covered lake.
At approximately 12:51 p.m., New York State Police at Whitney Point were advised to be on the lookout for a grey 2008 Dodge Magnum that was being driven by the suspect in question, Elvis F. Guzman, 27, of Cincinnatus.
It was alleged that Guzman was possibly headed southbound on State Route 26 after he drove away from a violent domestic dispute that had just occurred in the Town of Willet in Cortland County.
At about 12:55 p.m., Trooper Gardner observed the suspect’s vehicle as it drove from State Route 26 onto State Route 79 and activated his emergency lights and sirens in pursuit.
The suspect did allegedly refuse to stop and after a brief pursuit that covered less than two miles, Guzman allegedly purposefully drove his vehicle off of State Route 79 and into a field that led down a steep embankment and into an ice-covered lake in Barker, New York.
Trooper Gardner, with the assistance off a passing motorist who stopped to help, allegedly made the rescue by tying a rope to his belt before entering the ice-covered water.
Gardner successfully pulled the partly-unconscious Guzman free from inside his sinking vehicle and within seconds of the rescue the suspect’s 2008 Dodge Magnum sank into the freezing water.
Fire departments from Whitney Point, Killawog and Lisle responded along with the Greene Water Rescue and Dive team all responded to the incident.
There were no other passengers in the suspects vehicle at the time of the accident.
Troopers from the NYSP Troop C Dive Team assisted with securing the vehicle for tow truck removal and the vehicle was transported to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department.
Guzman was transported to Wilson Hospital where he refused medical attention. The NYSP issued Guzman numerous traffic tickets returnable to the Town of Barker court.
Guzman was then turned over to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department who is handling a felony assault charge in the second degree investigation, against Guzman at this time.
