‘Zumbathon’ to benefit Norwich family
NORWICH – Plans are a go for a three-hour “Zumbathon” to benefit a local family in need.
The fundraising event will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at St. Bartholomew’s in Norwich. In addition to “night club style” Zumba, the event will feature a Chinese auction and a variety of other activities to support the Bloomingdale family of Norwich. The entry donation fee is $10 per adult.
Proceeds will be used to offset medical expenses incurred by Celeste Bloomingdale, an avid supporter of the community and longtime employee of Gus’ Steakhouse in Norwich. Bloomingdale is feared to suffer from permanent paralysis as a result of herniated discs pressing against nervous tissue in her spine.
Bloomingdale, a mother of three, is currently recovering from an intensive surgical procedure that may help with her condition.
Friends and family say that prior to her ailment, Bloomingdale was an active runner and valued member of the community who took part in a number charitable 5k fundraising events.
“She’s been in this community for most of her life and has supported this community for most of her life. She’s really an amazing person,” said Maria Fernandez, Zumbathon organizer, instructor, and owner of Gus’ Steakhouse in Norwich. “She’s so loyal. I consider her to be like a daughter ... It’s time for us to support her because that’s what events like this are all about. They’re about supporting one another.”
A “Go Fund Me” online account has also been created to help the Bloomingdale family with medical expenses. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/kdgh55zk.
