Woman said to have received $36,228 in unlawful DSS public assistance
NORWICH – On Feb. 26, 2016, Jessica L. Branagan, 30, of the Town of Norwich was arrested by members of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.
Branagan was charged with one count of welfare fraud in the first degree, and one count of offering a false instrument in the first degree.
It is alleged that Branagan was receiving public assistance and failed to report additional income she was receiving. In turn, she allegedly received $36,228.50 in assistance from April 2010 through July 2015.
The Chenango County Department of Social Services Fraud Investigation Unit assisted in the investigation.
“Anytime we have a suspicion of welfare fraud or someone makes a referral of an individual that may be getting benefits they aren’t entitled to, we investigate them and turn them over to the police if we feel it rises to a level of criminal investigation,” said Daniel Auwarter, Deputy Commissioner of the Chenango County Department of Social Services
More information may appear on this matter in a future edition of The Evening Sun.
It should be noted that all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
