Route 12 northbound shut down temporarily following two-car MVC
NORWICH – Shortly after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Norwich Emergency Response team toned over the scanner regarding a two-car motor vehicle accident on Route 12 heading out of The City of Norwich.
The accident did involve a vehicle driven by one male who was accompanied by one female as his passenger, both requiring medical attention.
At this time the identities of these two has not been released.
According to City of Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo the State DOT workers had parked their vehicle alongside the road on Route 12 and were working to dig out the trenches when their vehicle was struck.
“Vehicle was heading north bound on Route 12, the driver had some sort of medical event and veered off into the work zone and hit the State DOT Truck corner to corner,” said Chawgo. “The passenger tried to arouse him, and she couldn’t and then they hit the truck.”
The male victim was identified over the scanner as being in critical condition. It should be noted that a Life Net Helicopter was radioed and did land in the road ready for transport.
“They’re going to be transporting one patient to Wilson Hospital, and we already transported the other patient to Wilson by ambulance,” said Chawgo. “He (male patient) has serious injuries, and the female victims aren’t as serious, but they’re serious enough that she needs to go to the Trauma center.
It should be noted that none of the DOT State workers were inside their vehicle at the time of the accident and therefore were not injured as a result.
At this time, due to the accident happening between Country Club Road and Meads Pond, all traffic should be diverted from Route 12 heading northbound as it is closed down temporarily as teams attempt to clean the area of debris.
