Otselic youth airlifted following trailer fire Sunday night
OTSELIC – A 16-year-old youth was airlifted to a regional burn center following a rural structure fire in the Town of Otselic Sunday night.
According to county dispatch records, the Chenango County 911 call center at 9:24 p.m. dispatched five mutual aid fire departments to the scene a reported structure fire at 2213 County Road 16 near the Plymouth – Otselic line.
Upon arrival, crews confirmed a fully involved house trailer with no entrapment.
While the youth was able to escape the burning trailer, those on scene said he sustained the burns while attempting to evacuate the family's two pet dogs.
The 16-year-old Otselic Valley sophomore is currently in stable condition after being air-lifted to SUNY Upstate Hospital in Syracuse at 9:50 p.m. and is being treated for second and third-degree burns to his upper body, hands and face.
Meika Button, mother of the youth, indicated that a faulty furnace in the residence was to blame for the blaze.
“The fire started with the furnace; Kenny heard a loud noise and when he got up to look it [the home] was already in flames,” said Button. “As of this morning they said he had mostly second degree burns on his upper half of his body.”
Button also indicated that no one else was at home at the time, and that the family's two dogs were lost in the fire.
“I would like to give special thanks to Julia Cookingham her and her husband for being the first ones there,” said Button, who was out of state when the fire broke out.
