Friends of Rogers to host seminar on climate change
SHERBURNE – Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne is giving locals the chance to learn more about climate change and to share ideas on what can be done to minimize their carbon footprint.
Friends of Rogers (FOR) will partner with Hamilton Friends Meeting (Quakers) to sponsor an informational seminar titled “Climate Change in Our Time: Myth or Reality?” The event will be held 10:30 a.m. April 9 at the FOR visitor center off Route 80.
With so much confusion surrounding the issue of climate change, the goal is to clarify the impact of climate change through dialogue and presentation of facts.
“This is a very special program. We feel there should be more dialogue about these things and what can be done,” said FOR Development Coordinator Jessica Moquin. “There’s a lot of confusion out there about climate change. Is it dramatic? Is it not? Are there opportunities to improve it? Can we improve it? This is meant to be an interactive discussion so people can ask those kinds of questions.”
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average temperature of the earth has risen 1.5 degrees over the last century, and it’s expected to rise another .5 degrees to 8.6 degrees over the next 100 years. Though small, these changes could lead to big variations in weather patterns and climate.
“Climate change, which is defined as a change in global climate patterns, most recently attributed to increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide from human activities, has become one of the most polarizing topics in American politics,” explains John Pumilio, Friends of Rogers Board Member and Director of Sustainability at Colgate University. “The ideological and political divide on the issue of climate change has undermined the science and led to uncertainty among many people who are not sure what to believe.”
Pumilio will be leading the discussion at FOR. Moquin said that the seminar will incorporate back and forth discussions on a number of subjects, including the science of climate change and what’s being done about it.
Pumilio previously worked for the National Park Service, the National Audubon Society and Tauck World Discovery. He’s been instrumental in implementing sustainability programs at Colgate that have led to a 30 percent reduction of the campus’ carbon footprint since 2009.
“We are extremely grateful for this partnership,” said FOR Executive Director Simon Solomon. “Since 2011, when Friends of Rogers saved Rogers Environmental Education Center from closing, we have relied on the generosity of local organizations to support community activities, allowing this vital resource to be preserved – and to flourish.”
“We’ve never done an event like this before; but when it comes to environmental education and how climate change is affecting us, that’s definitely in our wheelhouse,” Moquin added. “We were the logical organization to partner with to get the word out to give people the opportunity to ask questions.”
Solomon said this may be the first part of a two-part series hosted by FOR based on climate change. The end goal, he said, is to partner with the Quakers for another seminar in the fall.
