NORWICH – The Norwich varsity baseball team came out swinging against Susquehanna Valley, and found themselves up late in the game, only to suffer a late game collapse to lose to the Sabers 6-2.
We did some good things. In the second inning, Paden Burlison hit a really good shot hitting a double. Then he scored at the next at bat when Nick Murphy hit an RBI single. It was a beautiful shot out to left center,” said Norwich head coach Rich Turnbull.
The third inning saw Jake Walsh and John Predmore of Norwich earn two hits, only to be followed by two strike outs.
Followed by the two strikeouts, Turnbull explained, “They were on second and third and then Burlison hit them both in with a two RBI single.”
This saw Norwich up 4-2 in the sixth inning, only to eventually see missed opportunities at the bat cause the late game shut down.
“They switched pitchers and switched to a lefty. We hit their first guy pretty well,” said Turnbull. “We struck out 14 times tonight that's too much. We struck out one time with the bases loaded in the sixth, thats tough.”
After only recording one error on the night, and taking the game to one extra inning, Norwich still suffered the opening day loss at a scoreline of 6-4.
Norwich takes on Sherburne-Earlville at home later today at 4:30 p.m.
“Im really happy, we need to get right back at it. If we had time to go back to practice and think about it it wouldnt do us any good. We played pretty well, this is a team thats usually in the sectional finals every year. We were in and winning for most of the game. I think we need to keep on building on what we have. But I think a lot of guys are upset tonight, which they should be, they lost. So its nice to turn the page right away,” said Turnbull.
