NORWICH – Norwich varsity softball had high hopes coming into the season opener, only to have them dashed by star pitcher from Susquehanna Valley Sophia Pappas.
“They’re pitcher is only a sophomore, but she verbaled to Binghamton last year. She is in my opinion the best in our division,” said Norwich head coach Scott Moore. “We only ended up with one hit, and I told the girls if we play the defense we should be able to play then we can keep it close. Hannah was pitching good, and we had three throwing errors and two were early in the first inning.”
The bright spot on the night saw Norwich shut out Sus. Valley from the second inning all the way until the fifth inning. That stretch saw Norwich down only two runs after the shaky first inning start.
“First game jitters. We ended up shutting them down in the second third and fourth innings,” said Moore. “They only had eight hits so I cant complain about Hannah's pitching. The game was Sophia Pappas throwing a one hitter against us.”
Norwich will have time to regroup after their loss as they will travel to take on Seton Catholic next Monday.
“Seton on Monday night, its a totally different type of team. We just gotta stay within ourself and we'll be fine. It should be totally different when we get to Monday night against Seton,” said Moore.
