NORWICH – The opening track meet of the 2016 season for the Norwich Purple Tornado proved to be beneficial to all despite the girls dropping a big loss.
“The girls are still a very young team as well. A lot of girls are coming up and even though we didn’t get a lot of wins tonight, individual performances for the girls are actually pretty good,” said Norwich head coach Shaun Horan.
The boys side for Norwich saw them earn the eventual win over Cazenovia at a team score of 79 to 62. The Norwich boys saw Norwich earn a first place finish in 11 out of the 17 total events.
Impressively, the Norwich boys 4x100 meter relay team, comprised of Berger, Race, Walsh, and Conant, ran a meet winning time of 46.5 to open the season.
“The season opener to come out like this, it is fantastic. The 4x100 ran a 46.5, and they have two freshman an eighth grader and a sophomore; that is a time that seniors are running,” said Horan.
Norwich claimed first place finishes at the 200 meter dash with Zach Race running a 24.7; the 400 meter hurdles with Connor Nial running a 109.3; 800 meter with Noah Bufalini running a 2:16; 1600 meter run with Ben Erickson running a 4:56 time; 4x400 and 4x 800 meter relays, comprised of Bufalini, Gawronski, Supenski, and Health, and Gawronski, Bufalini, Cardoza, Erickson respectively ran a 3:56 and 9:03 time.
“It is really good, we know they’re a strong team. Our team is very young so to get the win against a team that is very competitive on the track and they definitely has some field events too was really impressive,” said Horan.
It was the Norwich seniors Jordan Vinal and Thomas Reilly who really stepped up their performance in the field and jumping events where Vinal won both High Jump and Triple Jump. In the High Jump, Vinal jumped a 5'2” and in Triple Jump, Vinal secured a 39'.
Reilly won both Shot Put and Discus with a throw of 47' 1 1/4” in Shot Put and 139'5” in discus.
On the girls side, Norwich would get blown out at home 110-31 as the Lakers ran away win the team win.
“We have a small team with only like 22 girls on the team doing all these events. The future looks really good. And on top of that I don’t think people realize how good Cazenovia is, they’re solid across the board. They do pretty well all the time with a lot of standouts and a lot of depth. They’re a tough team to beat, so the girls shouldn’t get discouraged,” said Horan.
Norwich would only secure two event winners for the girls with Kara Evans winning the Discus with a throw of 97' and Kaitlyn Shaver winning the Shot Put event with a throw of 31'11”
Norwich will travel to Newark Valley this Saturday.
